Description
No. 12 Harley Road is a house that was originally two cottages, dating back to the 17th century with later additions and alterations. The structure is timber framed with painted brick infill set on a rendered plinth, topped by a plain tile half-hipped roof. It was originally composed of three framed bays, but the left-hand bay has been partly truncated and rebuilt in mid-19th century reddish brown brick on the side and rear; the roof appears to date from this period as well. The building has one storey and a gable-lit attic, featuring square panels in the framing, with three panels from the cill to the wall-plate and long straight tension braces.
On the exterior, there are late 19th century cast-iron patterned casements to the left and right of a 19th century boarded door located to the left of center, along with a small fixed-light larder window to the right. A central reddish brown brick ridge stack is present, with an integral end stack on the truncated left-hand bay. At the rear, there is a two-storey mid-19th century brick addition that is partly painted black and white to imitate a timber frame. Inside, the timber frame remains largely intact, featuring chamfered ceiling beams with heavy joists.
