Description
1 and 2 Church Approach, formerly known as Carl Haws Cottages, are two cottages that have been combined into one building. This structure originated as a medieval hall house, with a later 17th-century wing added at the rear. It features a timber frame with later brick cladding and a hipped thatched roof, which has been replaced with plain clay tiles and includes smoke gablets.
The hall house consists of two bays and has crown post trusses. A later inserted floor showcases massive exposed joists and partitions supported by a central truss. The front has a tie beam and collar purlin that has been cut. There is a central door flanked by four windows, which are three-pane, two-light casements. The rear wing has a gabled tile roof that connects with level ridges and features an exposed timber frame with square panels of red brick. It includes casement windows, a later brick porch, and a lean-to that encloses the south wall.
The upper level displays herringbone red brick set in lime mortar, and the original oak diagonal bar windows are now missing. The interior reveals exposed timbers in the floor, and there is a massive brick stack at the junction of the wing, featuring a large deep fireplace and a smaller fireplace above. A simple stack rises above the roof, and there is a disused well located at the southwest corner.
