Description
No 40 on High Street is an L-shaped house dating from around 1700, which was added to a medieval house that retains only one bay at the back. The front section is constructed of rubble stone with red brick dressings, while the first floor features tile hanging and the ground floor is rendered. The building has two storeys and two windows, topped by a high-pitched hipped tiled roof. The windows have been altered to modern casements, including a small bowed shop window, all featuring glazing bars. To the right, there is a four-panel door with a bracketed flat hood. The medieval part of the house is the solar end of a hall house, with a dais beam now visible externally and the beam end of a later inserted hall ceiling. This section has a collar-purlin roof.
