Description

Old Mill House, Wisteria Cottage, and Old Bell House are a group of former open hall-houses that have been subdivided into three properties. This late medieval house dates from the 15th century and consists of three bays, likely originally a two-bay hall with only one bay remaining open. A chimney was inserted around 1600, and the building was refronted and extended in the early 19th century, with further changes to the windows in the 20th century.

The structure is timber-framed, with the exterior clad in painted brick, and features a tiled southwest elevation. It has a slate roof with an off-central brick chimneystack. The building is two storeys high and has four windows, predominantly early 20th-century designs, including two ground floor bays on number 79. The doorcase with a flat hood on brackets at number 77 predates the mid-20th-century conversion into three properties.

Number 75 retains two upright posts and exposed beams in the kitchen, along with a 17th-century outshot at the rear. Number 77 features a large open fireplace from around 1600 that serves four hearths and includes a bacon loft. The roof has crown posts with foot braces, a collar purlin, a tie beam, and wall plates, all with stop-chamfered details. The medieval rafters measure 7 inches by 4 inches, and there are sooted rafters. Until 1862, this building served as the mill house for Horley Mill, which was first mentioned in 1309 and belonged to Chertsey Abbey in the 15th century.
