Description

Hookwood Manor is an early 16th-century hall-house that has been altered in the late 16th century and the 19th century. The south elevation features a timber frame with four bays, originally designed as a one-bay open hall, with a cross passage of one bay to the west and two storeyed bays at each end. The building is two storeys high, with curved braces and plastered infill. It has a slate roof adorned with a row of lions' head masks along the gutter and smoke louvres at the ends. The windows are 19th-century casements, and there is a six fielded panelled door. At the rear, there is a late 16th-century two-bay smoke bay kitchen wing. The east elevation, which is from the 19th century, is stuccoed and also two storeys high, featuring a slate roof and a rainwater head with lions' head masks. The right-hand gable has barge boards, and there are three sashes with intact glazing bars, along with a four-light canted bay built into the porch on the ground floor. Inside, the house has a crown post roof and an inserted hearth, with the hearth beam dated to 1571. The kitchen wing includes a smoke bay with a gallery where servants would sleep against the warm partition. The staircase features Jacobean fretted bannisters and a carved finial on the newel post. The house was formerly known as Pixtons.
