Description
Povey Cross House is a late 16th-century, three-bay end smoke bay house with a back kitchen wing added in the mid 17th century. The house is timber-framed with square framing, featuring brick infilling on the ground floor and tile hanging on the first floor. It has a tiled roof. There are four casement windows and a weather porch over the gable. The roof structure incorporates clasped purling with three Queen Struts. Blackened rafters are visible over the former smoke bay. Mortices indicating the partition between the original hall and service rooms remain. The building’s structure is documented in the Domestic Buildings Research Group Report No 90, and further information can be found in Joan M Harding’s "Four Centuries of Charlwood Houses" on page 68.
