Description

The Old Forge is a house with a fascinating history, incorporating remnants of a late medieval building. The northern section is a gabled cross-wing, originally timber-framed and later filled with brick. The first floor overhangs, supported by exposed joists with curved brackets. The gable end is tile hung, and a ground floor window retains old brackets above it. Two service doors are set into the inner wall. A two-storey, three-window brick extension, built in keeping with the original, adjoins the cross-wing to the south. Later extensions have been added to the rear of the property. The house has high-pitched tiled roofs. In the early 20th century, it was the home of actors Seymour Hicks and Ellaline Terriss while they performed in J.M. Barrie’s "Quality Street." Following their residency, Quality Street was named after the play.
