Description

The Library at St John's School, originally a school chapel, was built in 1876 and has been altered internally. It is constructed of flint with sandstone dressings and features a red tile roof. The building is designed in a Gothic style and consists of a nave with an apsidal chancel, a south porch, and a south vestry. The nave has five bays, with a plinth, buttresses, and two-centred arched openings that include hoodmoulds. On the south side, the first bay features a gabled porch with an outer doorway moulded in two orders, while the fifth bay has a gabled vestry adorned with stone pinnacles and a geometrical rose window. The other bays have two-light windows with plate tracery. The north side includes a doorway in the first bay and similar windows in the remaining bays. The west gable wall is notable for a large four-light west window with bar tracery and a small quatrefoil near the apex. Above the centre of the plinth, there is a stone plaque inscribed: IN NO MINE DOMINI HVNC LAPIDEM POSVIT EDVARDVS HAROLDVS EPISCOP WINTON MDCCCLXXVI. At the east end, the chancel has three similar two-light windows with central shafts that feature stiff-leaf capitals. Inside, there are wallshafts supporting a roof structure that is now concealed by an inserted ceiling; otherwise, the interior is not of special interest.
