Description

Scholars is a former village school, now a house, built around 1860. The building features red brick with stone angle quoins and tiled roofs that include alternating bands of diamond-point and fishscale pattern tiling. There are stone quoins on the stacks and a wooden lantern on the roof ridge to the right, topped with a pyramidal cap. The structure has a long rectangular plan situated on a corner site, with cross wings to the left and a larger cross wing to the right. The left end has two storeys, while the right side is single storey, with the right cross wing being the former school hall. Stacks are located at the left end, the left side of the left cross wing, the rear right of centre, and at the rear. The gables on the left and the left return front feature pierced wavy-edged bargeboards, and there is ridge cresting on the roofs to the right. The left side has mullioned and transomed windows, with one on the first floor and one below, the front window being in a pentice-roofed square bay. The ends of the hall range have large stone-dressed "cross" windows with half-round section mullions, while the right side has plate glass windows. The windows on the right return front have hexagonal and diamond-pattern glazing in the upper lights above plain lower lights. There is a panelled door to the right under the lantern, and an older main door to the left in a recessed range between the cross wings, with a half-open balustraded corridor in front. A new main entrance has been added to the rear. Scholars is an important part of the group of buildings around the Village Green.
