Description
The Mausoleum and Walls at Wotton House, located on Brickyard Lane, date from the early 19th century, although they bear the dates 1590 and 1690 carved on their face. The structure features sandstone rubble walls surrounding an entrance court, with an ashlared entrance leading to a brick-lined chamber cut into the rocky hillside. In front, there is a rectangular entrance court that leads to a rectangular chamber behind a central door. The entrance walls stand approximately 5 feet high and are topped with iron railings that curve around to the front corners, flanking gate piers adorned with paired scroll work and wrought iron gates. The entrance courtyard was originally floored with terrazzo.
The entrance front is pedimented and features a block-vermiculated design with a gryphon (Evelyn Crest) in the tympanum and a metope and triglyph frieze. It has a lugged architrave that tapers to the top, leading to half-panelled tapering doors with wrought iron grilles in the upper part. The door lintel is decorated with butterfly carving and includes an inscription that reads, "Good deeds are the Best memorials."
Inside, the mausoleum has a terrazzo floor and a brick barrel-vaulted space with a patterned tiled dado wall at the end. There are twenty coffin niches made of brick and stone, arranged in two rows of five on either side, all currently empty.
