Description

The Beckford Monument, located approximately 8 metres east of the chancel of the Church of St Giles, is a tomb chest with associated iron railings, dating from the late 18th century. It commemorates Thomas Beckford, who died in 1781. The monument is made of sandstone ashlar and is designed in a classical style, featuring panelled sides and ends with wide vase-profile corners. On the south side, there is an inscription that reads: "THOMAS BECKFORD Esq Obit Aprilis 12th Anno Domini 1781 Aetat 24," along with a worn roundel at the head that appears to contain a helm and arms, followed by a lengthy inscription commemorating others from 1730. At the time of the survey in 1988, the lid had two large longitudinal cracks, and both end panels were loose. The entire monument is enclosed within tall cast-iron railings that are rusted.
