ASHTEAD ASHTEAD PARK TQ 1858-1958 7/17 Beckford monument approx. 8 metres east of chancel of Church of St Giles

GV II

Tomb chest and associated iron railings. Late C18. Commemorates Thomas Beckford (d.1781). Sandstone ashlar. Classical style. Panelled sides and ends, with wide vase-profile corners; inscription on south side:- THOMAS BECKFORD Esq Obit Aprilis 12th Anno Domini 1781 Aetat 24 Lid headed with worn roundel which appears to contain a helm and arms; followed by lengthy inscription commemorating various others from 1730. (Two large longitudinal cracks in lid, and both end panels loose at time of survey, 1988.) The whole enclosed within tall cast-iron spear-headed railings (rusted).
