Description

This chest tomb, dating from the 18th century, is located 1 yard north of the north wall of the Church of St James in Shere. It is made of stone and sits on a plinth with a moulded base. The sides feature raised panels, and it is topped with a darker flat stone lid that has a moulded edge. The corners are adorned with gadrooned angle piers. Although the inscription is illegible, a crest is visible on the lid. The tomb is surrounded by a railing with spear standards, which have urn finials at the angles and the center of the north and south sides. This tomb is included for its group value.
