Description
Unstead Farm House and Unstead Farm Cottage are a house and cottage dating from the mid-16th century, with a 17th-century cross wing on the right end and 20th-century extensions at the rear right. The building is timber framed, with the first floor exposed and infilled with colourwashed brick and render. The right-hand return front features sandstone rubble with brick dressings, and the 20th-century extension has imitation framing with brick infill. The cross wing has a tile-hung gable and plain tiled roofs, with a gablet at the rear. There is a tiled pentice course on the ground floor of the cross wing. The structure is two storeys tall with an attic in the gable, featuring a triple inserted stack at the junction of the wing and house, located to the right of centre. The left side has three framed bays with curved bracing visible on the first floor. There are four 2-light diamond-pane leaded casement windows on the first floor and two casement windows on the ground floor. The cross wing has one casement window on the first and attic storeys and two windows on the ground floor. The main entrance door is located to the right of centre, with an additional entrance to Upper Unstead Farm House on the right-hand return front at the junction with the 20th-century extensions. A studded door leads to Farm Cottage on the left-hand return front. Inside, there is a wealth of visible framing, including some sooted beams in the roof, suggesting it may have originally been a Hall House.
