Description

A house, now a farmhouse and a separate cottage, dating back to the 16th century, with alterations made in the 17th and 18th centuries. The house was originally built as a hall with a cross-wing. It has been altered into a low two-storey, two-bay central range with a gabled bay to the left (the farmhouse) and a higher two-storey bay to the right (now a separate cottage). The walls are constructed of rubble and cobbles at the ground floor west end, brick (random and English bond) and brick (rebuilt at the east end), with graduated grey slate to the front and left return and graduated stone slates to the rear. A C20 half-glazed door is located in the centre of the building, and a side-sliding sash window with 3 x 6 panes is in the right bay on both the ground and first floors. C20 3-light casement replacements are visible in the central range and left bay. A narrow C20 6-pane window is on the first floor to the left of the right bay. All windows have flat stretcher arches. There is a brick band at eaves level on the gabled left bay and a first-floor band on the right bay. Barge boards and the upper half of a crown post with collar are exposed in the left gable. Brick stacks are situated in front of the ridge opposite the entrance, far left, rear left, and at the end of the right side. The rear features a central 6-panel door with a timber lintel and small-pane windows in the centre and left bay. The left return shows a half-glazed door to the left of the centre and a small-paned window on both the ground and first floors, with a projecting first-floor band and boxed-in eaves. Inside the centre and left bay (Lake View Farmhouse), the front door opens onto the side of a large fireplace. The living room contains ovolo-moulded cross beams with pyramid stops. The cross wing and hall display substantial remains of a two-bay timber-framed structure, visible on the first floor. The central truss consists of principal posts with curved braces to a tie beam, with wattle and daub infilling the walling beneath the tie and wall plate supported by studs. The principal rafters are visible against the rear wall of the cross wing, and the roof structure is likely original. In the right bay (Lake View Cottage), a ceiling beam rests above the front window lintel.
