Description
The K6 telephone kiosk, designed by Giles Gilbert Scott in 1935, is a notable example of 20th-century industrial design. It is constructed of cast iron, painted red overall, with long horizontal glazing in the door and sides. The crowns on the top panels are applied rather than perforated. The kiosk features rectangular white display signs that read “TELEPHONE” beneath the shallow-curved roof. Modern internal equipment is present. The kiosk is in good condition, with minor flaking paint on one side.
The K6 design represents a development from Scott’s earlier K2 model of 1924, exhibiting a more streamlined appearance, compact size, and cost-effective mass production. Giles Gilbert Scott (1880-1960) was a prominent British architect, responsible for notable commissions including Liverpool Cathedral and Battersea Power Station. The K2 and K6 telephone kiosks demonstrate a considered adaptation of architectural traditions to meet contemporary technological needs; over 70,000 K6s were eventually produced.
The kiosk is situated on a grass verge at the side of the road within the Albury Conservation Area. It exhibits group value with two other Grade II listed buildings on The Street: Weston Dene, a Gothic style house dating to around 1860, and a row of mid-19th century former shops (now houses) built in a vernacular style with tall chimneys. These buildings reflect the village’s evolution as an estate village, shaped by Captain Finch’s estate expansion in the late 18th century and further developed by Henry Drummond in the mid-19th century.
