Description
This is a post located 50 yards south of the Stokesheath Road Bridge in Oxshott, dating from around 1860. It is made of iron and features an obelisk shape mounted on an angled frame and a square plinth, standing approximately 6 feet high. The shaft of the obelisk is adorned with a cast shield of the City of London. This post served as a coal and wine tax marker, indicating the boundary where duty was payable, with the coal tax origins tracing back to the 1660s.
