Description

Elm Grove Farm, now a house, dates from the early 18th century and was refronted in the late 18th century. It is built of limestone ashlar and coursed squared rubble with ashlar dressings, topped with concrete plain-tile and Welsh-slate roofs featuring ashlar stacks. The building has a central-stair plan with a rear service wing and stands three storeys high. The symmetrical three-window ashlar front includes storey bands and flat arches, with a central arched doorway that has a keyblock and a radiating fanlight. The ground and first floors have 12-pane sash windows, while the second floor features 6-pane sashes. The hipped roof has two lateral stacks at the rear and extends over a central rear projection that contains a stair window and the rear entrance. To the right, there is a lower rubble and slate rear wing.

Inside, there is a large stone-flagged stair hall that features a fine open-well stair with turned balusters per tread and closed-string upper flights. The sitting room has an 18th-century plaster cornice and tall arched recesses with serpentine shelves. The dining room boasts a large early 18th-century moulded stone fireplace with a segmental head, keyblock, and imposts, along with some early 18th-century architraves. Attached to the left is a two-storey, four-window rubble and slate range that has an external stone stair at the rear and a two-row brick dovecote in the gable; part of this range is now incorporated into the house.
