Description

Garden Cottage is a garden building and house dating from the early to mid 18th century. It is constructed of ashlar and coursed rubble stone, topped with a hipped roof made of Welsh slate and featuring a central brick ridge stack. The building has two storeys and an attic, with a two-window range on the principal front, which faces the rear. This front is made of ashlar and includes a giant central alcove that is plastered and colourwashed. A triple keyblock extends to the top of the roof parapet.

On either side of the alcove, there are sash windows on both floors; the ground floor windows have round-arched heads and consist of S panes, while the upper floor windows have six panes. The ground floor features projecting keyblocks that reach the floor band, which continues within the alcove. There is a part-glazed door and additional sash windows on the left side, with more sashes on the right side. The front that faces the road also has a two-window range, consisting of six-pane sashes above two-light casements with toplights, all supported by stone lintels. A two-light hipped dormer is located at the centre of the roof.

The alcove front looks out onto what was once the large walled garden of Ditchley Park and was likely positioned along the main axis of the estate.
