Description

Lodge Farmhouse is a 2-storey farmhouse, originally a park feature or lodge, built around 1770. It is constructed of coursed rubble stone with stone dressings and has a hipped roof made of Welsh slate. The building features stone and block central ridge stacks and incorporates Gothick architectural details.

The facade has a three-window range of 2-light casements set in arched and moulded surrounds, with tall blocked windows on the ground floor. The central bay protrudes slightly and includes a central door accessed by a flight of steps, topped with a fanlight that has Gothick tracery and a moulded hood mould. There are single-light narrow arched windows on either side of the door. The building has a plinth and a moulded cornice, with single glazing-bar sashes featuring Gothick tracery in the arched heads on the left and right sides.

The rear of the farmhouse, which was the main front facing the park, has a canted center with an open archway on each side, featuring 4-centred heads, moulded impost bands, and heads. These openings are now blocked with recessed walling that includes a part-glazed door and sashed windows. Above and to the sides, there are five quatrefoil windows, all with elaborate decorative glazing. On the ground floor, flanking the canted bay, are glazing-bar sashes with Gothick tracery in the arched heads and moulded hood moulds. The cornice features a rim of pendentures as its lowest element.

Inside, there is a dog-leg staircase, and the hexagonal kitchen, which was originally an open garden room behind the canted bay, retains part of a triglyph frieze. Lodge Farmhouse is part of a group and was designed as a formal composition with stables located approximately 5 meters to the southeast and southwest. The farmhouse overlooks a small valley in Ditchley Park, where a lake once existed.
