Description
55 The Square is a small house dating from around 1700, with possible earlier elements. It is built of marlstone rubble and ashlar, topped with a Stonesfield-slate roof featuring limestone-ashlar gable stacks. The house has a three-unit plan and a rear outshut, consisting of one storey plus an attic.
The ashlar front has a doorway to the right of centre, which features a fielded six-panel door and a 19th-century canopy. To the right of the door is a three-light wood mullioned and transomed window, and to the left is a two-light casement, both with leaded glazing and flat arches that have projecting keyblocks. On the first floor, there are two three-light leaded gabled dormers. The left bay of the front projects and has a small casement window. The right gable wall includes a drip mould, while the left gable, which adjoins No. 56, has a parapet. At the rear, there is a full-width tiled outshut. The 19th-century stacks have plinths and moulded caps. The interior has not been inspected.
