Description
54 The Square is a small house dating from the late 17th century to early 18th century. It is constructed of coursed squared marlstone with some ashlar dressings and features a thatched roof with a limestone-ashlar gable stack. The building has a two-unit plan with an end outshut and stands two storeys tall.
The front, which has two windows, includes a central doorway with a plank door, a flat arch, and a 19th-century canopy supported by cusped wooden brackets. To the left of the doorway is a two-light stone-mullioned window with lattice glazing and a label. On the first floor, there are two two-light lattice casements. The roof has a 19th-century stack to the left, complete with a plinth and moulded cap.
The outshut on the right features a plank door beneath a flat arch and is topped with a corrugated-asbestos roof. The left gable wall and the rear of the house have additional two-light stone-mullioned windows, which were possibly inserted in the early 19th century. The interior has not been inspected.
