Description
56 The Square is a house located in Great Tew, likely dating from the 17th century and re-fronted around 1700. It is constructed of marlstone ashlar and coursed squared rubble, topped with a Stonesfield-slate roof featuring limestone-ashlar gable stacks. The house has a two-unit plan with a rear stair tower and stands two storeys plus an attic high.
The symmetrical front has three windows and a central doorway that features a four-panel door with a flat arch and a projecting keyblock. There is a shallow open porch with ashlar sides and roof. The outer bays have lattice-glazed cross windows with keyblock flat arches, and above the door is a single-light transom window. An ashlar storey band connects to ground-floor pilaster strips at the corners and to a panel above the door. The gables are topped with parapets, and 19th-century stacks have moulded caps. The rear of the house includes a full-height central stair tower with stone-mullioned lattice windows. The interior has not been inspected.
