Description

Frenches Cottage is a house located in Great Tew, dating from the 17th century, with remodels and extensions from the early 19th century and alterations in the 20th century. The building is constructed of coursed squared marlstone and features thatch and shingle roofs, along with limestone-ashlar and brick stacks. Originally a single-unit plan, it has been extended to three units and stands two storeys plus an attic.

The higher thatched bay on the right side is from the 17th century and includes a plank door and a two-light leaded stone-mullioned window with a label at the ground floor. The first floor features a 19th-century lattice casement window with a chamfered stone surround and a label. The later bays display an irregular arrangement, including a buttress, a segmental-arched doorway, a small chamfered opening, a further two-light leaded casement with a label, and three additional leaded casements with renewed lintels. The upper part of the wall and the left gable wall are likely from the 20th century. The later bays have a central brick stack, while an ashlar stack rises from the left gable parapet of the thatched bay. The right gable wall, which faces the road, features leaded chamfered windows with labels across three floors. The interior has not been inspected.
