Description
47 The Green is a 17th-century house located in Great Tew. It is constructed of coursed squared marlstone with limestone and marlstone ashlar dressings, topped with a Stonesfield-slate roof and part-rendered ashlar stacks. The house has a two-unit plan and stands two storeys plus an attic.
The symmetrical front features two windows and a central doorway set within an early 19th-century marlstone-ashlar porch. This porch has a chamfered basket-arched entrance beneath a label that continues as a string above blocked side windows, which also have labels. The stone roof is adorned with a four-gabled apex finial, and the porch gable includes a recessed quatrefoil containing a rose. The outer bays of the front have stone-mullioned lattice windows, with a four-light window on the ground floor and a three-light window above. The left gable has a parapet.
Inside, the house features stop-chamfered beams and joists, two open fireplaces (one with an inglenook and bread oven), and a cellar with heavy joists laid flat. There is also a winder stair. The porch may have been designed by either Thomas Rickman or Thomas Fulljames.
