Description

42 The Green is a small house located in Great Tew, dating from the 17th century. The building is constructed from coursed squared marlstone rubble with some ashlar dressings and features a thatch roof with limestone-ashlar gable stacks. It has a three-unit lobby-entry plan with an end outshut and stands two storeys plus an attic.

The higher section of the house has a two-window façade, with a plank door positioned to the extreme right, flanked by two 2-light stone-mullioned windows that have labels above them. The first floor features three-light casements. The lower bay, which is set back to the right and was formerly known as No. 41, includes two-light casements, with the ground floor window having a chamfered stone surround and a label. All windows are fitted with lattice glazing.

The left gable of the higher section has a parapet with projecting kneelers, and both gables include small attic windows. There are 19th-century stacks to the right of both sections, each with plinths and moulded caps. At the rear of the main section, there is a canted stair projection featuring a small leaded window. The stone-slated outshut to the left has a flat-arched doorway, a three-light leaded casement facing left, and a former bread-oven projection at the rear. Inside, there is a stop-chamfered beam and a winder stair.
