Description
No. 50 The Square is a small house from the 17th century that is now in a ruinous state. It is built from coursed squared marlstone and currently has no roof. The house has a two-unit plan and stands two storeys plus an attic, with an additional single storey plus attic. The front of the building features two windows: on the ground floor to the right is a three-light stone-mullioned window, and to the left is a two-light window, both with labels and lattice glazing. In the center, there is a small lattice stair window. A first-floor window opening remains on the right, although the upper part of the left bay has collapsed. The left gable wall has a 19th-century window with a label, while the right gable includes a small leaded attic window. At the rear, the entrance is still visible, featuring a plank door and two two-light mullioned lattice windows with labels. The roof was originally higher on the right side. Inside, there is a chamfered and stopped beam, a large open fireplace with a chamfered bressumer and a curved adjoining stair recess, and a bread oven. Some purlins are still in place, spanning onto the massive central stack.
