Description
48 and 49 The Square are a pair of small houses dating from the mid to late 17th century. They are constructed from coursed squared marlstone rubble and feature thatch and Welsh-slate roofs with ashlar and rendered ridge stacks. Each house has a two-unit plan with a rear outshut and stands two storeys plus an attic high.
The front of No.48, located on the left, has a two-window arrangement with a plank door and canopy situated between three-light stone-mullioned windows that have labels. The first floor features leaded three-light casements. No.49 has a combination of a two-light and a three-light mullioned window at the ground floor, with two two-light casements above. The stacks rise in the centre of each cottage.
The left gable wall includes a parapet and features mullioned windows across three floors with leaded glazing. The slated rear outshut, which faces the road, has plank doors for both houses. The interiors have not been inspected, but No.48 likely has a lobby-entry plan.
