Description
Number 53 is a small house dating from the mid to late 17th century, located on the east side of The Square in Great Tew. It is constructed from coursed squared marlstone and coursed marlstone rubble, topped with a thatch roof featuring a limestone-ashlar ridge stack. The house has a two-unit lobby-entry plan with an end outshut and is one storey plus an attic.
The front of the house has two windows and a central doorway, which features a plank door and an ashlar-sided open porch. This doorway is flanked by two-light stone-mullioned windows that have labels and lattice glazing. There are traces of a second doorway on the extreme left. Additional similar windows can be found in the gables and at the rear, along with a small stair window located at the rear of the stack. To the right, there is a stonesfield-slate roofed outshut. A 19th-century central stack has a plinth and a moulded cap. The interior has not been inspected. Additionally, there is a cast-iron pump attached to the front of the outshut.
