Description
52 The Square is a house dating from the late 17th century, constructed of coursed squared marlstone with a Stonesfield-slate roof and limestone-ashlar stacks. The building is designed in an L-plan and has two storeys plus an attic. The two-window front features three-light stone-mullioned windows on each floor, complete with labels and lattice glazing. On the far left, there is a small chamfered opening with a label that aligns with the stack. The right gable wall includes mullioned windows at the ground floor and in the gable, and it connects to a short rear wing with a hipped roof, which also has additional mullioned windows. There are two entrances located at the rear. The stacks on the left gable and the ridge of the rear wing were added in the 19th century and have plinths and moulded caps. Although the interior was not inspected, it is noted to contain an inscription in the attic that reads: "John Hiorn that is my name and with my hands I made this same. This house builded by John Stow and Joan his wife and here they lived all their life. Builded in the year of our Lord God 1680 RSIHTEA."
