Description

Tulip Tree Cottage and P.H. Wilson, Butcher, and attached stables is a house and adjoining shop dating from around 1700, with an extension added in the early 19th century. The building is constructed of coursed, squared marlstone, featuring some ashlar dressings, and has roofs made of Stonesfield slate and Welsh slate, with limestone-ashlar stacks. It has a three-unit plan with secondary ranges, standing two storeys plus an attic, and includes both two-storey and single-storey sections.

The main range presents a regular four-window front, with a keyblock roll-moulded doorway located to the right of center, and leaded cross windows that have projecting keyblocks. The roof is adorned with two leaded roof dormers, gable parapets, and flanking stacks. The rear of the building features two additional cross windows and four single-light windows with transoms, while the chamfered plinth includes a cellar door. To the right of the main range, there is a two-storey bay that is partly 20th century but incorporates a two-light wood-mullioned window and a three-light wood mullion-and-transom window. A single-storey range, which is Welsh-slated and dates from the 19th century, extends to the rear from the right and contains the two-light casements and stable door of the shop. This range also runs parallel to the main range as stables. The interiors have not been inspected.
