Description

No. 12 Old Road is a house dating from the 17th century, which was re-modelled in the early 19th century. It is built from coursed squared marlstone with some ashlar dressings and features a thatched roof with an ashlar ridge stack. The house has a three-unit plan and stands two storeys high, with an additional storey in the attic.

The front of the house is divided by two early 19th-century ashlar buttresses that have moulded plinths and steep gabled heads. A continuous drip mould runs around these buttresses and across the centre and left bays, rising over a stone sundial located in the left bay. Previously, there was a datestone inscribed with the year 1636 and a shield of arms in the centre, but this has been re-set in the left end wall and replaced by a re-used moulded stone window with a label.

On the first floor, there are two three-light casement windows in the centre bay and a two-light casement window to the right, all featuring 19th-century chamfered stone surrounds and labels. The end wall of the lower left bay, which has a hipped roof, contains two two-light stone-mullioned windows with labels, one of which is in a dormer gable. Below this, there is a 19th-century chamfered basket-arched doorway with a label and carved lozenge stops. The rear of the house includes a three-light mullioned window and a stepped stair projection. The interior has not been inspected.
