Description
No. 3 Holywell Street is a house dating from the early 17th century. It is two storeys high and built of ashlar stone, having been restored in 1972. The property features cellars and has a modern red tile roof with four gabled timber-framed dormers. The chimney stacks have cement-faced bases and brick shafts.
The south elevation is made of stone and includes two three-light stone mullioned windows on the ground floor. To the east of the front door, there is a projecting splayed bay with three stone mullioned lights at the front and one on each side. To the west of this bay is a two-light stone mullioned window. All these windows retain the remains of square labels. The bay extends to the first floor, which also has two three-light and two two-light stone mullioned windows, topped by a hollow moulded string that runs the width of the house.
The front door has a stone frame with moulded stop-chamfered jambs and sunk spandrels, set in a four-centred arch within a square head. Above the door is an early 18th-century hood with a dentilled moulded cornice supported by carved and enriched wooden brackets. The door itself is an ancient oak, studded with nails. The four gables feature 18th-century sash windows.
At the back, the north elevation includes early 18th-century and modern additions. Inside, the house contains 18th-century panelling, fireplaces, and a staircase, along with some early 17th-century panelling. The roof timbers are exposed.
This building is part of a group of listed buildings on the north side of Holywell Street.
