Description
No 1 Holywell Street is a house that was likely re-cased in the late 18th century, with the original structure possibly dating back to the 17th century, as indicated by the east wall. The building is three stories tall and features stuccoed rubble on an ashlar base, along with cellars. The dressings are also made of ashlar.
The ground and first floors are highlighted by a front doorway in stucco, which has coved imposts and a semi-circular arch. Above the doorway is a moulded stone hood supported by brackets. There is a projecting stone moulded frame above this for a sash window, which features a pediment and scrolled consoles on the architrave. The top of the parapet has plain coping. The building has modern brick stacks and five sash windows with glazing bars, all set within stone frames, architraves, and cills.
A drawing made in 1822 by J C Buckler shows the exterior as it was at that time. All the listed buildings on the north side of Holywell Street form a group.
