Description
Lower Farmhouse is a farmhouse that has been converted into a house. It is likely from the early 18th century and was extended in the early to mid-19th century, with later additions and alterations. The building is constructed of uncoursed limestone rubble and features a stone slate roof. The original three-bay 18th-century house was extended to the left in the 19th century.
It has two storeys and an attic, with the 18th-century section displaying a three-window front featuring 20th-century casements with wooden lintels. There are two raking eaves dormers located in the middle of the roof slope. A central 20th-century half-glazed door is situated under a contemporary open gabled timber porch.
To the right, there is an integral ashlar end stack with a dripstone and capping, and a similar ridge stack (which was formerly an end stack) to the left at the junction with the 19th-century addition, which has a straight joint. The 19th-century addition features a 20th-century casement on each floor but is said to have originally been stables with a hayloft above.
Attached to the right gable end is a gabled range with a roof raised in artificial stone slates at the front, and there is a short gabled range at right angles to the rear of the main range. The interior was not inspected during the last resurvey in May 1987, but it is likely to be of interest.
