Description

Bridgeside Cottage is a pair of cottages built in the late 18th century, with extensions added in the early and mid-19th century, along with later alterations. The cottages are constructed from uncoursed limestone rubble with red brick dressings, topped with stone slate and artificial stone slate roofs. The original pair of cottages was extended to the left in the early 19th century, and a higher gabled range was added at right angles to the rear in the mid-19th century.

The main range is one storey with an attic, while the mid-19th century addition is two storeys high. The late 18th century cottages feature a symmetrical arrangement of segmental-arched doorways on the left and right, which are linked to adjoining windows by gauged brick heads. The central window also has gauged casements, including one above an infilled left doorway. The right doorway has a boarded half-glazed door.

There are three roughcast gabled eaves dormers with 19th century casements and decorated bargeboards. The 19th century addition to the left has a ground floor casement with a concrete lintel and a dormer above that matches those on the 18th century part. An integral end stack on the right has a dripstone and a top rebuilt in red brick, with a similar ridge stack at the junction between the 18th and 19th century parts, which was formerly an end stack.

A single-storey outbuilding extension from the 19th century is attached to the left gable end. The rear range features a 19th century casement on each floor and a segmental-arched 20th century glazed door to the left, along with an integral axial end stack on the right. The interior has not been inspected recently but is said to have chamfered ceiling beams in the ground-floor rooms. The cottages are included for their group value.
