Description
Windmill House is a farmhouse, now a house, that underwent mid-18th century remodelling of an early 17th century structure, with later additions and alterations. It is built of roughly coursed limestone rubble, featuring banding at the top, and has a stone slate roof with coped verges. The building is two storeys high with an attic and has three windows on the upper floor, which are 19th century three-light casements with wooden lintels positioned directly below the eaves. The ground floor has 18th century segmental-headed openings with projecting keystones. The central entrance features a similar opening with 20th century glazed double doors. There are three 20th century gabled dormers in the roof slope.
To the left, there is a stepped external end stack with a moulded dripstone and a rendered red brick top, while a similar integral end stack is located to the right. There is a faint suggestion of raised eaves at the front of the house. Inside, the left ground-floor room, which was formerly two rooms, has a chamfered spine beam. The right room contains a chamfered spine beam with stepped ogee stops and an inglenook fireplace with moulded stone jambs and a bread oven. The hearth stone of the fireplace in the room above is visible in the ceiling to the left, and the position of a former winder staircase can be detected to the right. The windows have panelled shutters. The first-floor rooms also feature chamfered spine beams, with the right room having moulded stone jambs at the fireplace. The roof structure consists of a double-purlin collar and tie-beam design in four bays, with principal rafters rising from the tops of the walls. There are flat-roofed additions to the rear from around 1930, which are not of special architectural interest.
