Description

Fountain House and West Cottage is a house that has been divided, dating from the mid to late 18th century, with extensions from the mid-19th century and later alterations. The building is constructed of roughly coursed limestone rubble and features a concrete tile roof with coped verges on the main range, while the 19th-century addition has a slate roof. The main range is a three-unit baffle-entry design with a gabled addition at the rear, forming an L-shape. It stands two storeys tall with a gable-lit attic and has a three-window front. The windows are late 19th-century casements set in 18th-century openings, which have stone lintels and projecting keystones. The entrance is located between the first and second windows from the left and features a 19th-century boarded door beneath a contemporary gabled trellised porch. There are integral end stacks and a ridge stack directly above the entrance, all with dripstones; the right stack has a 19th-century purple engineering brick shaft, while the other two were rebuilt in the late 20th century. A gabled staircase projection is situated between the 19th-century addition to the rear on the right and a 20th-century addition on the left, which is not of special architectural interest. The property occupies a prominent corner position.
