Description

The William Smith Memorial is a monument built in 1891 for the Earl of Ducie in memory of William Smith. It features a large monolith set on a base of two large square steps, made from local stone. An iron plate on the east side of the monolith states, "In memory of William Smith, the Father of British Geology. Born at Churchill March 23, 1769. Died at Northampton August 28, 1839. Erected by the Earl of Ducie 1891."
