Description
The Swerford War Memorial is a war memorial erected after the First World War to honor the men of Swerford who served and died during the conflict. It is made of local golden limestone and stands approximately 2.5 meters high. The memorial features a squat stone obelisk set upon a cube, with a recessed panel on each face, all resting on a plinth with two offsets.
The north panel, which faces the church, has a carved inscription that reads: "OF THE 35 MEN FROM/ SWERFORD WHO SERVED IN THE / KING'S FORCES FROM 1914-1918/ THE FOLLOWING GAVE THEIR/ LIVES FOR THEIR COUNTRY/", followed by six names.
Located in the center of the village on a small green opposite the medieval church of St. Mary, which is listed as grade II*, the memorial serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by this small community during the First World War. Although the architect and exact date of erection are unknown, the memorial's simple design and use of local materials contribute to its significance. War memorials like this one are recognized for their strong historic and cultural importance at both local and national levels.
