Description
This is a bridge located approximately 500 metres west of Sandford Park, built in the early to mid 18th century. The west face is constructed of coursed limestone rubble with marlstone ashlar dressings, while the east face features marlstone with limestone ashlar dressings. The bridge is designed in a Baroque style.
It has a row of seven graduated semi-circular arches, which are adorned with ashlar voussoirs and double-stepped radiating keyblocks. The principal keyblocks are connected to a stepped ashlar band. The wide central span includes four subsidiary keyblocks, while the other arches have two each. The east face of the bridge is partly in ruins. There is no parapet, and the turf roadway rises towards the centre of the bridge, which spans approximately 70 metres across the largest lake in Sandford Park.
Sandford Park itself is listed in the Historic Buildings and Monuments Commission County Register of Gardens at Grade II.
