Description

The water garden and swimming pool, located about 30 yards east of Shipton Court in Shipton-under-Wychwood, were designed around 1903-1906 by Perkins and Bulmer for Mr. Pepper, a coal magnate. The garden features paved copings and rubble retaining walls. It includes a long rectangular basin with rebated corners, where the south end is enhanced by a minor cascade spring flanked by carved horses. Behind the basin, steps lead up to a swimming pool situated at a higher level, which has apsed ends and stepped edges. The garden has paths at different levels leading to a lawn and flagged hallways, with steps connecting the various levels at both ends and in the center. The steps between the swimming pool and the lower basin lead to a path that ascends to the main terrace stairs. The overall layout of the garden reflects Edwardian ideals and is beautifully landscaped.
