Description

The gates, gatepiers, and flanking wall at the west entrance to Shipton Court were built around 1903, possibly incorporating materials from the 18th century. They feature ashlar walls and piers, along with wrought-iron railings and gates designed in an 18th-century style. The low ashlar wall has coping that projects forward at regular intervals over wall buttresses, connecting two sets of stables and contributing to the symmetrical layout of Shipton Court. The tall ashlar gatepiers have pilasters, a moulded cornice, and ball finials, with chamfered inner corners. The large wrought-iron gates display high-quality scroll-work and leaf designs in their upper sections, with enriched hinge panels. There are also flanking pedestrian gates that feature over-throws in a similar style.
