Description

The Summer House is a garden pavilion located on the east side of High Street in Shipton-under-Wychwood, built around 1903-1906 by architects Perkins and Bulmer. It is constructed from rubble with a Cotswold stone roof and features a lead gutter with embossed decoration. The building has a cross-plan and is gabled in the Cotswold style, with mullion windows. The coped verges are adorned with kneelers and finials. The south gable includes a loggia with chamfered antae and block caps, topped by a stepped panel, while the side entrances are Tudor-arched. Both the north and south fronts have a Tudor-arched doorway flanked by 2-light hollow-chamfer mullion windows. Inside, the space resembles a billiard room, featuring a large fireplace recess with benching and sidelights, and windows that display heraldic 20th-century roundels. The woodwork and metalwork throughout are crafted in the Art Nouveau style. The Summer House was recently used as a Roman Catholic Chapel and is set at the head of the formal water garden of Shipton Court.
