Description

SHIPTON-UNDER-WYCHWOOD HIGH STREET SP 2617-2717 (east side) 7/69 - Summer House GV II Summer house and garden pavilion, circa 1903-06. Perkins and Bulmer architects. Rubble with Cotswold stone roof, lead gutter with embossed decoration. Cross-plan and gabled in Cotswold manner; mullion windows. Coped verges with kneelers and finials. South gable has loggia with chamfered antae and block caps over which is a stepped panel; side entrances Tudor-arched. North and south fronts have Tudor arched doorway and flanking 2-light hollow-chamfer mullion windows. Interior rather like a billiard room: large fireplace recess with benching and sidelights; windows have heraldic C20 roundels. Most of the woodwork and metalwork is well-wrought in the Art Nouveau tradition. Until recently used as a Roman Catholic Chapel. Important setting at the head of formal water garden of Shipton Court (qv).
