Description

The sunken garden located to the south of the west wing of Marsh Court was designed by E. L. Lutyens and constructed between 1901 and 1905. It features stone steps with flint and stone risers, and a surrounding wall primarily made of brick, except for the ends which are of flint and stone. The garden includes stone piers and a balustraded parapet.

At the western end of the south front, the garden has an exposed basement that overlooks it. The walls extend south from the southwest corners of the house, projecting approximately 20 meters with a five-bay design. At the southern end, a 10-meter long wall is pierced by a gateway that has steps leading up to it.

In the center of the garden, there is a pool measuring 2 meters by 8 meters, featuring a dolphin fountain at its center. Surrounding the pool is a step that is below the surface of the water, with four additional steps leading up to a walkway. Below the walkway, at the corners and at intervals, there are small flower beds containing fountain heads. Above the walkway, a low wall encircles the flower beds on the sides and retains the lawn against the house.

Halfway along the sides, there are flights of three steps leading to tanks inscribed '1904 HJ' on tile piers, although one tank is missing. Above each tank, a fountain pours into a narrow conduit that is cut into the steps leading down to the pond. The walls on either side of the garden have stone piers every 2 meters, topped with a stone balustraded parapet.

At the southern end, there are three steps leading up to the level of the flower beds on the sides, followed by six semi-circular steps that ascend to the gateway in the wall, which is made of stone and flint and features similar detailing to the side walls. The gatepiers are moulded with a moulded offset base and head.
