Description
The South Court in front of the south side of the house at Marshcourt was built between 1901 and 1905 by the architect Edwin Lutyens. It features walls made of ashlar stone and flint. The court is located at the center of the south front and is enclosed by a projecting eastern wing, a walkway above a sunken garden that runs south from a projecting bay, and a wall on a retaining wall above the southern walkway. To the west, there is a bed with a 1-meter high wall that retains it from the walkway, with eight steps leading down to the walkway and additional steps at the southern end. The opposite side has a 0.5-meter retaining wall for a bed and a higher lawn in front of the ballroom, with several steps leading up to this level at the far end. Along the southern edge, there is a low wall with large square beds at either end where the retaining wall projects further south. In the center of the court, there is a sundial.
