Description

The pergola and retaining wall with pools, located 25 meters south of Marsh Court, were designed by E L Lutyens and constructed between 1901 and 1905. The retaining wall is made of ashlar stone and knapped flint, featuring brick niches and brick surrounds for the pools, with stone walkways surrounding them. The pergola consists of tile piers set on stone plinths, with large timber beams connecting them.

The structure begins at the western side of a 10-foot-wide set of steps leading to the court beside a sunken garden. The wall extends 3 meters to the east and includes stone corbels that support the beams of the first two sections of the pergola. It then steps 2 meters north towards the house and continues 12 meters east, where an alcove contains the pools. The return walls feature brick niches with fountain bowls that feed into the pools.

The central sections of the pergola are designed with two spans, with the second span extending over the pools and resting on stone corbels above oval niches with console corbels. The eastern end mirrors the western side, but instead of steps, the wall steps back and transitions into brick, with rough stone and brick steps rising parallel to it in several flights leading up to the lawn in front of the ballroom.
