Description
The Dowes House and Home Farmhouse is a farmhouse with origins dating back to the 16th century, although the existing structure primarily dates from the 17th century and underwent alterations in the mid-19th century. The building is constructed of rubble with Cotswold stone roofs and features an irregular, roughly L-shaped plan.
The west range, known as Dowes House, has two storeys and gables, with the right-hand gable featuring an ashlar chimney. The windows are arranged in an irregular pattern of 1:3:1, with two gabled dormers in the central part. The ground floor of the right gable has French casements, while the left-hand gable shows a rebated surround to a former mullion window. The prominent ashlar chimney is positioned to the right of center and serves the right-hand wing, which has a gable oriented at a different angle from the main roof. The left-hand wing, which extends to the north, has mullioned windows on its return fronts.
On the east front, the chimney remains a key feature, with a rounded projection at its base for the stairs. The east range is a long structure that is hipped on the left-hand side and has irregular gables to the south, along with mullioned windows. This range previously accommodated the dairy and domestic quarters of Dowes House, which was formerly known as Upper Farmhouse.
