Description
This is a farmhouse, now two cottages, dating back to the 17th century, with alterations made in the early 18th to mid-19th centuries. The construction is of rubble, partly coursed, with freestone quoins and timber lintels. The roofs are Cotswold stone, and the chimneys are a mix of brick and stone. The cottages are arranged in an angled plan, adapting to the contours of the land.
Shepherd’s Cottage is entered via a large, irregular extension to the left; this extension is set back and features a catslide roof from the 19th century. The main part of the cottage has a single range of three-light casement windows on the ground floor, retaining oak hollow chamfer mullions. Spring Hill Cottage has three windows on the first floor and three on the ground floor. The right-hand ground floor window retains hollow chamfer oak mullions. It has a central doorway with urn stops, leading to a six-panel door with the top two panels cut away and glazed. No 2 Spring Hill Farm Cottage is angled twice; the first section has a gable projection containing a bread oven and a range of two-light casement windows. The right-hand section has two gabled half-dormers, a ledged door, and a three-light casement window. Gabled extensions project from the rear, with only Shepherd’s Cottage retaining stone slates. Ordnance Survey maps identify Spring Hill Cottage as number 2, while No 2 is marked as number 1.
