Description
The Old Malt House is a row of four dwellings located on Hensington Road, dating from around 1720, with extensions added in the late 18th century. The building is constructed of squared and coursed limestone, featuring ashlar walling on Nos. 1 and 3, which were built at the same time as Hope House. The roof is gabled, covered with concrete tiles, while No. 1 has stone slates. There are brick ridge and end stacks. The structure has an 8-unit plan, is two storeys high, and has a total of nine windows. Keyed segmental arches are present above 20th-century doors and late 18th-century six-pane sash windows. The three-window range to the left features timber lintels over late 19th-century doors, six-pane and eight-pane sashes, and a flat stone arch over a 20th-century window. To the right, there is a small one-storey range that has been remodelled as a garage.
Inside No. 1, there are chamfered beams and a stone segmental-arched fireplace, which includes reset late 17th-century Baroque carvings on one jamb. Nos. 3-7 have not been inspected. Nos. 1 and 3, which are contemporary with the rear wing of Hope House, were formerly part of the Malt House owned by Miles Parker of Hope House. The building is included for its group value.
