Description
No. 10 Oxford Street is a house that has been converted into a shop and flat, dating from around 1730. It is constructed from squared and coursed limestone and features a gabled concrete tile roof with brick stacks at the ends. The building has a double-depth plan and consists of two storeys and an attic, with a three-window range.
The entrance is highlighted by wrought-iron brackets that support an early 18th-century shell hood over a 18th-century six-panelled door, which includes two glazed panels. The canted bays have late 19th-century plate-glass windows, and there are flat stone arches above 19th-century three-over-six-pane sash windows. The roof includes gabled dormers.
At the rear, there is a hipped stair projection that connects to a gabled early 18th-century wing, which also has two storeys and an attic, featuring a keyed flat arch over its door. Inside, there are cased beams, and the central passage has stone flag floors along with 18th-century panelled doors. A notable feature is the fine early 18th-century dog-leg staircase with a landing, which has turned balusters set on a closed string and ramped handrails. The first floor has not been inspected. The building was described as "lately rebuilt" in 1746 and is located on the site of a 16th-century grammar school.
